Now your face will become your iPhone’s password. They have developed a new way to unlock your iPhone X. Well that’s not a big deal for an iPhone, it’s biggest rival Samsung has face recognition feature since 2011 but nevertheless, Apple is Apple..!

We should be thankful for advances that took place in face recognition feature of the operating system since 2011. Iris faces recognition is the only Technology which is currently available in the world. Apple Inc. s is not the only company which is moving towards advancements of this level…!

iPhone X is all about experiencing new things on a smartphone ever.It is a great invention by the Apple Inc.The iPhone X is developed, designed and marketed by Apple Inc.It was released on 3rd of Nov,2017 in India.The Apple company skipped their one model iPhone 9 and launched iPhone X because of iPhone’s tenth anniversary [written as iPhone X{“x” symbol for 10 in Roman numerals}].

As Apple itself calling is it the future of smartphone.So it launched its new smartphone with some special features like Face ID by the True Depth camera, infinity OLED screen with Super Retina HD display, A11 Bionic chip, Wireless Charging and many others.

On the other hand, it has some losing keys to having no Home button, Touch ID, Headphone Jack and some others.The iPhone X launched with a modified version of iOS 11.0.1 that makes better use of the different screen layout.

ARKit has been established as a reliable way to do stable consumer level AR since its first announcement at WWDC in June.

What is Arkit?

ARKit (Apple ARKit) is Apple’s augmented reality (AR) development platform for iOS mobile devices. ARKit allows developers to build high detailed AR experiences for iPad and iPhone X. Environments captured through the device can have animated 3D virtual text, objects and characters added to them. AR scenes made by one individual are persistent and can be seen by others visiting the location later.

Using the iOS device’s camera, accelerometers, gyroscope and context awareness, ARKit performs environment mapping as the device is moved. Sensor fusion of the inertial sensor data with the data from the camera allows for highly accurate location awareness and mapping.

iPhone X

The software picks out visual features in the environment such as planes and tracks motion in conjunction with information from the inertial sensors. The camera is also used to determine light sources by which AR objects are lit. Apple’s solution to the increased detail and therefore memory usage is a sliding map where old data disappears for new users can place anchors to mark creations they want to save.

According to industry speculation, ARKit may have come from Apple’s acquisition of the AR company Matario. The company had already demonstrated solid AR technology and a well-received API.

  • API additions to plugin

There is now a new configuration called ARKit Face Tracking Configuration which can be used when running on an iPhone X. There is new Run with Config and Run With Config And options methods that take the ARKit Face Tracking Configuration to start the AR session.

  • Features Exposed by Face Tracking

There are four main features exposed by Face Tracking in ARKit. They are described below and corresponding examples that use them are detailed.

  • Face Anchor

The basic feature of face tracking is to provide a facing anchor when ARKit detects a face with the front camera on the iPhone X. This face anchor is similar to the plane anchor that the ARKit returns usually, but tracks the position and orientation of the center of the head as you move it around.

This allows you to use the movement of the face as input for your ARKit app but also allows you to use this anchor to attach objects to the face or head so that it will move around with the movement of your head.

  • Face Mesh Geometry

The face tracking API can also return the geometry of the face it detects as a mesh. We can then use the mesh vertices to create a corresponding mesh in Unity. Then we can use the mesh in Unity with a transparent texture to allow all sorts of face painting and masks. We can also put an occlusion material on this mesh when we attach things to the face anchor so that the attachments occlude properly against the video of the face.

The example scene called FaceMash Scene shows how to display the face mesh geometry on top of your face with a default material on it (so it appears grey). It has the usual Camera Tracker Game Object to move the camera in the scene. In addition, it has AR FaceMesh Manager Game Object, which has a standard Mesh Renderer and an empty Mesh Filter component.

This Game Object also has Unity AR FaceMesh Manager component, which does the following:

  • Configuration of the face tracking

    Anchor position and rotation updates on the transform of this GameObject
    Extract the mesh data from the anchor per frame and populate a mesh with it, and set the MeshFilter component to reference that mesh. iPhone X
  • Blend Shapes

Another set of data we get from face tracking are coefficients that describe the expressions on your face, which can be mapped onto a virtual face to make it have a similar expression to yours.

Our example scene FaceBlendShape Scene shows this. In the UI, it shows the coefficients of the different blend shape values that are returned by the current expression on your face. See how they change when you change your expressions!

This scene has the same Game Objects as the FaceMash Scene, but in addition, also has a Blendshape Output Game Object which contains a Blend Shape Printer component. This component extracts the blend shapes from the face anchor if it exists and outputs it to the screen UI.

We are working on a more elaborate example where these values will be mapped on to the facial animation of a virtual head to get a better idea of how this could work in your experience.

  • Directional Light Estimate

Another interesting set of data that you get with face tracking is a directional light estimate of the scene, based on using your face as a light probe in the scene. The estimate that is generated contains three things:

  1. Primary light direction
  2. Primary light intensity
  3. Spherical harmonics coefficients of the estimated lighting environment in all directions

The last of these is very interesting for us in Unity, as it is the solution used for dynamic global illumination in our standard rendering pipeline. Knowing this information, we can take advantage of it in our example scene.

The Face Directional Light Estimate scene has an AR CameraTracker and an ARFaceAnchorManager, which moves a standard grey sphere mesh around with your face.  

What’s new is the ARKit LiteManager GameObject, which has the Unity ARKit LightManager component on it that gets the spherical harmonics coefficients from the Frame Updated event and plugs it into all of the Unity light probes in the scene, including the ambient light probe (which is used when none of the light probes in the scene affect the mesh). This effectively lights the meshes in the scene with the estimated environment lighting dynamically.

  • Apple iPhone X Design

The first thing you will notice about the Apple iPhone X is how small it is. In fact, is not much larger than the iPhone 8. Actually, at 5.8 inches the iPhone X packs a larger screen than the iPhone X but is significantly smaller.

So much so that the iPhone can fit easily into the iPhone 8 Plus and still have some real estate behind. This means the iPhone X will be easy to hold for a lot of users and thus have a better acceptability than Apple’s Plus range phone.

The phone has a distinct steel frame, which in the space grey model is a dark and blends well with the rest of the phone. In fact, the phone has no edges and this steel frame melds into the edge-to-edge display. But while the phone is touted as bezel-less there is a thing frame that is visible where the screen meets the frame, unlike on the Samsung phones where the screen blends into the curves.

Yes, there is no Home button here. But the power button and the volume buttons stay where they are in the other recent Apple phone. There is a speaker grille at the bottom, flanking the lightning port.

The other significant change is at the rear where the dual camera bump is now vertical, unlike the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus where it is horizontal. The bump is pretty much the same height as in the iPhone 8 Plus.

This phone too has a glass back where you can clearly see your fingerprints. While this is a significant design diversion from what Apple has been doing for the past few years, it is a necessity for wireless charging to work. Though the phone has the strongest glass ever put on a smartphone, it also means you need to protect the back… just in case.

  • One silly issue

Apple knows the iPhone X is a phone that needs some extra protection and has hence released its first folio cover with the phone. It’s an expensive piece of leather at ₹8,600. However, while on Android phones you would dial, close the flap and start talking, you can’t do the same on your iPhone X.

Because as soon as you close the flap, the call terminates. So if you have invested in the iPhone X folio, you will need to hold the flap back. I am not sure this Folio will be successful.

With so much already out, everyone is hoping for something that hasn’t reached the rumor mill so that the ‘One More Thing’ element of surprise is still left. If you are an optimistic gamer, you could perhaps hope for a surprise appearance from on stage at the Apple event. As for the Apple iPhone X price, it is widely expected to touch the $1,000 mark, while the iPhone X price in India is said to top ₹1 lakh.
